Opinel knives have been around for over 130 years! Opinel knives are a part of French cultural heritage, their aesthetic and quality have won over generations of knife users.

In 1985, the Victoria and Albert Museum recognised Opinel knives as one of the 100 best designed items in the world.

Joseph Opinel invented the pocket knife In 1890, in a small village in Maurienne in Savoie, France.

Opinel has eco-friendly production processes by using recyclable materials, sorting waste, using cardboard packaging with environmentally friendly inks and in most cases, working with local suppliers to reduce the carbon footprint from transport. 50% of Opinels wood suppliers are located in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region, and 80% in France overall, which assists in reducing the company's overall carbon footprint.

There are two types of blades, one is stainless steel and the other is carbon.

Opinel try to limit wastage as much as possible during the ,manufacturing process.  The handles in the Atalier collection for example, are made out of scrap wood.
